Facts

Why did I start BetterALife Org?

I was a child of hunger myself. In the mornings, I would wake up so hungry. I couldn't wait to leave to get to Highs Store (now a 7-11), sit outside, and ask people for quarters. With this money, I would buy hot cocoa and junk food. Most days, I would not eat lunch at school as my mom didn't fill out the paperwork for free lunches. I remember one day I tried to grab a french fry from a friend, and I believe she must have also been really hungry as she smacked my hand away. Mortified, I played it off as if I was just teasing her. Smelling food was never fun, as I knew I didn't have access to it. I eventually rebelled as a teen. I was kicked out of my apartment with my mom over and over again from home, and I finally dropped out of high school in 9th grade. My mother was all too happy to sign me out of high school, as I am pretty sure she was tired of kicking me out of her house by this point. I never told anyone I was hungry. I was ashamed.

My job at the time of hunger, was as a hostess at Chilis bar and grill. I worked double shifts for free food any chance I could get; working only a single shift would allow me to only get half a discount. I knew this couldn't be it, and I knew that there had to be more. So I worked hard and eventually got my GED, went to college, and now work in security in the federal sector as my full-time job. BetterALife was created with the goal of no child going hungry.

BetterALife Inc takes a different approach to feeding the hungry. We go door to door, go directly to the schools, work with the school staff, and try to make it as personal as possible to show the children there is someone who cares and will feed them without income limits. We do not limit it to one or two pickups a week or month. BetterALife will feed anyone anytime someone says "I am Hungry".

What is BetterALife Doing to help

Since 2016 we have been paying off past due lunch accounts and adding a positive balance for the children to be able to continue to eat each day at school.  We currently help 9 different local schools which include elementary, middle, and high schools in Loudoun County, Va, and Fairfax County, Va.

We ensure no child is missed by providing bagged meals door to door in low-income communities.  While there we provide wellness checks and work to make sure the basic needs are being met for the children.

BetterALife also provides extra support.  When children live in struggling situations gaining study skills and other skills can become a challenge.  We understand this so we provide homework help, college application help, cooking classes, and more. We want every child to learn and be comfortable in basic life skills so we can help them get set up for future success.
